Sunday Opening
The library will be open on the following Sundays for study only.
April 13, 20, 27 May 4, 11, 18 10am – 5pm
May Bank Holiday Monday
The Library will be open from 9:30am to 5pm with full service.
Noise in the Library
| We have been receiving many complaints about noise levels in the building. Our Library Monitor will patrol at the busiest time of day to ensure a quiet study environment throughout the exam period. However, we need your assistance and co-operation. Chatting on the stairs and near to quiet study areas means that the noise travels to the study areas. Please note that the seating areas near the stairs on the first and second floors are for quiet study only. Mobile phones must be set to silent mode, and making and taking calls in the library is not allowed. |

Unattended Study Spaces
|
 |
To ensure that study spaces and workstations are used effectively and fairly we encourage students to apply the “30-minute Rule“. We understand that from time to time you need to take a break from your work, but please, leave a note to say what time you will return and do not hold your study space for more than 30 minutes. If you don’t return within 30 minutes and haven’t left a note, another student is entitled to take your place, or a member of staff may log off the PC you were using and move your belongings to one side to free up the study space.

JSTOR have just launched their new interface.
According to its creators: “A primary goal of the new platform is to enhance the user experience and to better address and support the research objectives of JSTOR users”
There is a long way to go but in terms of ease of searching JSTOR is getting there…
New Features include:
My JSTOR
- Manage your citations by saving them to a MyJSTOR account. You will need to create an account in order to save or send citations, as well as to save them to Refworks
- Accept JSTOR’s Terms and Conditions of Use once, rather than being prompted to respond with each article print or download.
Searching
- Search for words near each other: Proximity search is now available in the Advanced Search form, using NEAR 5, NEAR 10, NEAR 25 operators in the drop-down menus.
- Search for both the singular and plural versions of a word by adding an ampersand (&) to the end of the singular form of the word. Plurals now identify both regular (cat/cats) and irregular (knife/knives) plural forms.
- Apply stemming to their search by appending the “#” character at the end of their search term, e.g., “operate#”.
Article Page Viewing
- Thumbnail images of articles make it easier to see articles at a glance and to select pages within articles.
